The Danish Ministry of the Environment and the Danish municipalities recently held a competition (in Danish) for who could come up with the most innovative solution to the challenges presented by flooding in cities and climate changes. Together with the Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) and the Danish Knowledge Center for Agriculture (SEGES), SCALGO described a solution where nationwide flood risk analysis and nationwide weather forecasting is coupled to help prevent costly flooding by stopping the water before it reaches the cities. At the award show, held at the Danish Architecture Center in Copenhagen, SCALGO's solution was awarded the first prize for having the largest growth potential.
The solution is based on technology that SCALGO has built into SCALGO Live Flood Risk. This is a unique online tool both for engineering companies and municipalities working locally with flood risk and climate change adaptation projects, but also for nationwide organizations, such as government agencies, insurance companies and emergency management services, that need to manage the flood risk of highly dispersed assets.
Scalable Algorithmics (SCALGO) was founded with the mission to bring cutting-edge big terrain data processing technology to market. The SCALGO technology is based on more than two decades of basic and applied research on I/O-efficient and geometric algorithms at Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO) at Aarhus University in Denmark and at Duke University in the US, in collaboration with industry LiDAR and environmental GIS application experts. SCALGO provides a range of desktop software, analysis and online large-area detailed terrain data set processing and analysis products.
