Did you already see our new depression map? With this new SCALGO Live update we make it easier for you to work with natural depressions and to create your own detention areas.

Depressions in terrain indicate where water will naturally gather. In city planning, it makes sense, on one hand, to avoid building in low-lying areas inside depressions and, on the other hand, to use natural depressions to create much needed detention volumes to mitigate downstream flooding. In nature restoration, natural or man-made depressions provide opportunities for creating new wetlands that improve water quality.

Here are a few examples of how you can use the new depression map. The updated map is now available in SCALGO Live, so test it out in your project and let us know what you think!

Use existing depressions in urban flood mitigation

Colour depressions according to their volume and filter depressions so that only large depressions are shown in the map. This helps you identify areas where natural depressions can be used for flood detention. Combine the new depression map with existing tools, such as the watershed tool, and you are ready to start developing your flood management plan.

Intuitive wetland planning

New ways of working with the area of depressions help document that planned wetlands follow local guidelines; for example, this can help ensure that the area of the wetland is in accordance with the catchment size. You can colour depressions according to their area, filter depressions so that only depressions with a certain minimum area are shown, and click a point inside a depression to see the area of exactly the depression below that point. These new features make it easier to create initial plans for wetlands and other nature restoration measures.
