Student talks “Scalgo Live is fast, intuitive, and exceptionally precise”

Hubert Jamry is a recent MSc graduate in Environmental Engineering specialising in Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology in Poland. Recently, he won the prestigious CONSTRUCTOR TEMPORIS FUTURI award, an industry diploma competition. In his rewarded thesis, he used Scalgo Live.

In his thesis, Hubert Jamry used Scalgo Live to evaluate the efficiency of existing infrastructure in an urban catchment near Wrocław. He identified parts of the drainage system that fail to effectively manage stormwater and meltwater, and pinpointed areas requiring modernization or improvement.

What did you use Scalgo Live for in your thesis?

Scalgo Live assisted me in the flood hazard assessment as well as analysing stormwater and meltwater outflow directions. I used it to identify areas at high risk of flooding and assessed runoff volumes, flow paths and soil permeability. I also analysed the impact of various precipitation events on the open drainage system. I then used the platform for proposing locations for retention basins.

I divided my study area into three parts (see figure below). This division was intended to distinguish the specific characteristics of each watershed part, and make the analysis more precise. Part I is an agricultural area with low development, part II includes the village of Nadolice Wielkie and areas planned for development and in part III there is a stream that flows into a main channel of Kanał Graniczny.

Can you give some specific examples of how you used Scalgo Live in the thesis?

In the first phase of my work, I used Scalgo Live to identify flood risk zones in areas with low soil permeability, such as urban and industrial areas. The platform enabled me to map potential flood prone areas accurately highlighting locations of particular risk.

I applied 100 mm rainfall into the flash flood analysis to identify food prone areas. Each area was evaluated using two scenarios. Firstly, I created an extreme scenario without runoff coefficients, assuming a glass surface model. Secondly, I added runoff coefficients to understand the impact of the local soil conditions and existing development on water retention and surface runoff.

I also analysed surface runoff paths to understand how water moves during heavy rainfall. From these analyses, I was able to draw interesting conclusions that were taken into account in the next steps of my study.

Based on the obtained results, I identified strategic locations for the construction of retention basins in Part II and Part III of the catchment. These basins were proposed in the most flood prone areas to help maximise the reduction of flood risk and provide additional storage for rainwater that can be reused.

Hubert is passionate about designing drainage systems and water supply networks and has a strong interest in urban hydrology, heavy rainfall modeling, and blue-green infrastructure.

After graduation, he aims to work as a hydrologist or stormwater engineer, focusing on designing and optimising sewage systems to protect cities against flooding and adapt to climate change.
