Machine Learning Engineer

We are looking for an ambitious Machine Learning Engineer to join the highly qualified technical team at Scalgo and work on our advanced AI products that are used by thousands of people every day. This is an opportunity to make an impact by becoming part of an international scaleup that is working towards creating a blue-green, climate-adapted future using cutting-edge technologies.

About Scalgo

Scalgo was founded to change the way we plan our cities and protect our nature by bringing advanced terrain data processing to the market and harnessing the power of large-scale digital elevation data. Scalgo’s main product – Scalgo Live – is a web-based platform used by engineers, landscape architects, urban planners, and biologists who work to create better and more sustainable environments with space for water.

In Scalgo Live, users can quickly explore how surface water and terrain interact and experiment with ways to adapt cities to climate change, restore nature, develop blue-green urban environments, and manage stormwater around infrastructure.

Since launching Scalgo Live in Denmark in 2016, we have expanded into 13 countries, and now have more than 35,000 users spanning the Nordic countries, UK, Germany, Poland, France and the United States. We are constantly adding more countries and more geographic data to the platform with a plan to have global reach within the next five years.

Scalgo currently employs a team of 30 highly qualified employees covering 10 different nationalities. The technical team consists of world leading experts in designing and implementing algorithms for analysing trillions of data elements. The multilingual market team consists of highly skilled engineers, planners, and marketers with deep insights into surface water planning.

About the job

The Scalgo technical team has an ambitious strategy to develop advanced AI techniques for analysing detailed geographical data on a global scale.

We are collecting sub-meter precision data all over Europe and for the entire USA. Our highly skilled team of Computer Scientists and Machine Learning Engineers are developing algorithms and AI techniques for processing this data into advanced AI products using our inhouse GPU cluster. You will join a team that is not afraid to take on big challenges when there is both a technical and a commercial opportunity.

You will be working on our project to produce a global land cover map in sub-meter resolution from detailed aerial photography. This is a mature project that is already tightly integrated into Scalgo Live. We are maintaining highly detailed land cover maps for 9 European countries by continuously processing more than 57 trillion image pixels. The land cover maps we produce are used by thousands of users every day. You will be working on scaling the methods we use, increasing the accuracy of the maps, and adding new land cover classes to the classification.

You will also be part of the team that is working on using Machine Learning to enable faster and more accurate flood risk simulations on a global scale. The traditional approach to flood risk simulation has been to develop explicit solvers of partial differential equations, but we have been successful in using advanced Machine Learning techniques to predict the output of the physical simulations. This is a nascent, sophisticated, and game-changing technology that you will work on bringing to market.

You will report to our Head of Machine Learning, Jonas Tranberg, and work closely with the rest of the technical team. The job is based in Aarhus. If you are moving from somewhere else in Europe, we would be happy to help you relocate.
