Know your culverts in DynamicFlood

  • New releases

DynamicFlood has been updated with detailed information about culverts to help analyse flow and assess their capacity.

The capacity of culverts plays a key role in flood mitigation and stormwater management. Insufficient culvert capacity can lead to surface water accumulation at the inlet, potentially causing floods upstream. This can also exert significant pressure on roads, compromising their stability.

Culverts are an important part of any stormwater system. Now DynamicFlood support a detailed evaluation of your culverts.

Culvert behaviour in a hydrodynamic simulation also helps evaluate model stability - is the model running properly and are the results reliable?

DynamicFlood has now been updated with comprehensive culvert information. With a single click, you can access information about flow rates, water depths, culvert dimensions, and more.

Activate and use the culverts tool in a DynamicFlood Modelspace.

Quickly visualise and analyse your culvert's features. DynamicFlood now helps evaluate the challenges from culverts and identify appropriate dimensions to optimise the performance of your stormwater systems and flood mitigation measures.

Easy access to culvert information

In the Modelspace, you can now view and select culverts and other objects just like in Workspaces. When a culvert is selected, the right sidebar instantly displays a comprehensive overview of the culvert's performance in the model. You get a graphic overview as well as key parameters, making it simple to evaluate the culvert's performance at a glance.

View the profile to quickly see how the culvert is placed in the terrain.

For a more detailed view, click on the dropdown icons of the culvert section. This feature offers a quick and intuitive way to assess the culvert's placement and potential impact on water flow.

Detailed water depth at the inlet and outlet

Understanding water depths upstream and downstream of the culvert provides valuable insights into potential flow limitations. You can now see water depth in the graphic overview as well as in the detailed graphs showing depths over time. Examine these depths to evaluate if water flows efficiently through your pipe.

Click on the small graph icon to see detailed water depths over time.

Flow and velocity insights

Check out the flows and velocities through your culverts over time in detailed graphs. For experienced modellers, the flow regime information indicates whether the flow is limited at the inlet or outlet of the culvert. Use this information to assess culvert performance.

Review flow and velocity changes in your culverts with detailed graphs. The data indicates if flow is restricted at the inlet or outlet, aiding in performance assessment.

Adjust the culvert size and recompute

To improve your stormwater design, adjust culvert parameters such as diameter and length. After making these modifications, you can rerun DynamicFlood to evaluate the effect of your changes. This iterative process enables you to fine-tune the culvert's dimensions for optimal performance, ensuring it meets the specific requirements of your surface water management.
