Quick Facts about Copernicus DEM GLO-30

Cell Size30 m at equator (1 arc second)
Coordinate SystemWGS84
Vertical ReferenceEGM2008
Flight Years2011–2015

On the Global theme, Scalgo Live offers access to the Copernicus DEM (GLO-30), combined with land cover data from the ESA WorldCover project.

Caveats

  • With a resolution of about 30 m, the Copernicus DEM is not well suited for small to medium scale flood mapping, as important surface features such as dikes may not be well-represented.
  • The Copernicus DEM is a surface model, so in areas with e.g. tree cover the data may not model water flow well.

WorldCover land cover data

The ESA WorldCover 2021 data is available for viewing and downloading, and upstream area queries include an area subdivision by land cover.  The data has a resolution of about 10 m (at the equator).

Coordinate systems

Selecting a projection in meters

Scalgo Live Global uses Google's Web Mercator projection. Since this projection does not preserve areas away from the equator, workspaces always use a local coordinate system. When creating a workspace based on the Copernicus DEM, you'll need to choose which meter-based, projected coordinate system should be used instead. The data will then be reprojected to the selected coordinate system, with a cell size of 10 m, for running the analysis. The display will keep using the Web Mercator projection.
